Text Box: Greetings Members and Friends of Central Church,

Grace and Peace to each of you as we make our way through the heat of summer.  I pray everyone has had the opportunity for a time of “rest and re-creation.”

My month at the Summer Internship in the Art of Spiritual Direction was certainly a time of re-creation.  The rest part was not quite so present.  I remain grateful to the Staff Parish Relations Committee, the congregation, Alan Cook, the others who preached – Joe Krider & Sandra Exelby, Connie Edgecomb and the rest of the staff, John McLaughlin (Pastor at Holy Cross UMC), and especially Jackie (who took on all my “home duties”) for this opportunity of growth and renewal.

I am still processing the experience.  However, one of the critical re-learning for me is (as some you heard in last week’s sermon) is the need for spiritual self care.  Sometimes the “work” of the church can interfere with my need to care for my spirit.  If my spirit is not cared for, I cannot care for the spirits of the members of the congregation.

With this in mind, I have asked Connie Edgecomb to block out time in my calendar so that I can have this time of prayer and meditation to care for my spirit.  Every morning (at the least) I will have the scheduled opportunity to spend time in prayer and meditation.  I will be in the office after 9:30 a.m.  This will give me the chance to begin my day “prayed up”.

In addition, please note the Wednesday evening seminar beginning on September 24 in which we will explore spiritual disciplines and seek to discover our spiritual gifts.  EVERYONE IS WELCOME!

There will be more to share as time passes.  In the meantime...be good to yourself, to others, and to all God’s creation.

Blessings and Peace,
